The one-way wheel (also known as an overrunning clutch or freewheel clutch) is a critical component fitted to the drive end of an automotive alternator, functioning similarly to a one-way bearing. Mounted directly onto the alternator's drive shaft, it replaces the conventional rigid pulley. This arrangement enables the belt to drive the alternator rotor for electricity generation when the engine is running, whilst allowing the rotor to spin freely when the engine is switched off. This prevents the rotor's inertia from continuing to drive the engine.
