The oxygen sensor can convert the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas into an electrical signal and transmit it to the engine control unit (ECU), providing a key basis for the closed-loop control of the fuel injection system.

A malfunction of the oxygen sensor will directly affect the engine ECU's precise control over the air-fuel ratio, thereby causing a series of vehicle operation abnormalities.

Abnormal engine operation

• Unstable idle: Abnormal sensor signals can cause the air-fuel mixture ratio to be unbalanced during idle conditions, resulting in fluctuating engine speed during idling, and even vibration or stalling. This phenomenon of unstable idle is more pronounced after cold start.
• Abnormal exhaust odor: When the air-fuel mixture is too rich, unburned fuel in the exhaust will produce a strong, pungent gasoline smell. If the three-way catalytic converter overheats and fails due to imbalanced air-fuel ratio, it may also emit bluish smoke or black smoke with an unusual odor.
• Abnormal exhaust noise: In some cases, combustion inefficiency caused by oxygen sensor failure can lead to a "popping" sound inside the exhaust pipe. Additionally, blockage of the three-way catalytic converter may indirectly cause muffled exhaust noise due to poor exhaust flow.
