The alternator on your vehicle is an electrical generator used to charge your vehicle’s battery and power your vehicle’s electrical components. As the alternator spins, an electromagnetic coil rotor spins creating an electromagnetic field and allowing the stator to generate an alternating electrical current. The alternating current is converted by a rectifier regulator into a direct current that can be used by your vehicle.

Usage, Detection and Maintenance

1.Belt Maintenance: Tension sag of 10mm (thumb pressure with 10kg force). If too loose, it will slip and cause insufficient charging; if too tight, it is prone to damage the bearings.

2. Wiring Principles: When removing the battery, disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal; when installing the battery, connect the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal. This prevents tools from grounding and burning the rectifier diodes.

3. Cleaning: Accumulated dust affects heat dissipation. Blow clean with compressed air every 20,000 km. Do not directly spray with a high-pressure water gun.

4. Abnormal Noise Diagnosis:

• "Squeaking" metal friction — lack of oil in the bearing or eccentric belt pulley;
• "Squealing" high-frequency whistling — diode breakdown leading to increased stator winding harmonics;
• "Clicking" varying with engine speed — loose claw pole or broken fan.

5. Simple Detection (Engine Off):

• Using the diode range of a multimeter to measure B+ to the housing, six diodes should have a forward voltage of 0.3~0.5V and reverse voltage of infinity. Otherwise, the rectifier board is damaged.
• The resistance of the excitation winding should be 3~5Ω. It is abnormal if less than 2Ω or greater than 10Ω.

6. Service Life: 150,000~200,000 km under urban comprehensive driving conditions; 80,000~120,000 km for taxis/ride-hailing vehicles. High temperature, sand and dust, and overloading will shorten the life by 30%.
