The engine coolant overflow tube, also commonly referred to as an overflow pipe, expansion tank hose, auxiliary reservoir hose, or vent tube, is a small hose that connects the engine radiator (or radiator cap) to the coolant overflow reservoir/expansion tank.

It is not used for the main circulation but serves as a "pressure regulation and compensation channel" for the cooling system. It is crucial for maintaining system pressure balance, preventing coolant loss, and keeping air from entering the system.

Core Functions and Importance

1. Pressure Balancing and Relief:

When engine temperature rises and coolant expansion pressure increases, the pressure valve inside the radiator cap opens. Excess hot coolant and steam are then directed through this pipe into the expansion tank.

2. Coolant Recovery and Compensation:

When the engine cools down after shutdown, the coolant contracts, creating negative pressure within the system. At this point, the vacuum valve in the radiator cap opens, allowing coolant stored in the expansion tank to be drawn back into the main system through this tube.

3. Air Bleed:

After filling or servicing the cooling system, air bubbles circulating within the system can be expelled through this tube into the expansion tank. This facilitates air purging and enhances cooling efficiency.
